Leo Otterbein, PhD

Leo is a Professor of Surgery at Harvard Medical School, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center.  Leo has dedicated more than 25 years to elucidating the original concept that carbon monoxide (CO) at low, non-toxic concentrations has potent protective effects in numerous clinically relevant animal models.   His laboratory focuses on the mechanisms by which CO modulates cellular function in different disease models with the goal of understanding how to harness its beneficial properties for unmet medical needs. Leo trained at Johns Hopkins University, Yale University and the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center before coming to BIDMC.
